The Mafia Series: A Three-Part Saga

Induction, Made-Man and Destroyer in that order

Here, reader, I bring you a tale of a video game series known only as Mafia. 2K Games released three installments between 2002 and 2016: Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven; Mafia II; and Mafia III. Depending on how you view the series, it’s either another welcome addition into the open-world genre, or yet another GTA clone, especially in era when that was all too common. And like the series, it may or may not be accused of ripping off along with other video games, the Mafia series draws from the inspiration of mobster media from Godfather to Goodfellas, but what sets it apart from GTA is that the satirical take on American society is nonexistent and the controversy that lingers over the GTA series like a noxious cloud is also nonexistent.

The focus in the games is based strictly on the Mafia and all the mobsters within, so while some characters may be inspired by someone like Bob Hope or Lauren Bacall or Tippi Hedren, the most you’ll get are throwaway lines of dialogue or even cinema boards advertising popular films from the era… which I count as a worldbuilding plus as it captures part of the atmosphere in the games, but I’ll explore that aspect later.

Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven (2002)

Set in the city of Lost Heaven, an amalgamation of several major midwestern cities (especially where the Purple Gang and Al Capone were based in), during the interwar period and Prohibition, cab driver Tommy Angelo is coerced into aiding and abetting mobsters Sam and Paulie into helping them escape a rival family. Already mafia material; on the way back to their territory, these members of the Salieri Family compensate him for the damages and buy his silence, which considering how corrupt law enforcement was at the time, may not have been necessary, then again, not everyone was eating bribes like beans on toast at the time.

Being given time to think about becoming a Salieri gangster himself, Tommy initially declines until the rival Morello gangsters wreck his car again, and attempt to break his legs. Now it’s a matter of survival; those f[aah!]kers were gonna eat him alive. Over the course of the rest of the ’30s, Tommy continues his work with the Mafia and learns firsthand how complicated things could get: enemies with connections, friends who want out, strict adherence to the laws of the Mafia, and even betrayal.

Compared to other open-world games, Mafia’s strength comes in its more grounded and serious portrayal as opposed to simply being a video game. It gets to be cinematic at times with Scorsese/Tarantino-esque set pieces and dialogue. The influence is strong enough that it can feel like any one of the movies it draws inspiration from. Lost Heaven’s setting was reflective of the time period. When the government passed the 21st Amendment in repeal of the 18th, they moved onto other profitable avenues of illicit activity. Hollywood had to get those drugs somehow…

Incidentally, this won’t be the last time drugs make their way into the Mafia series. Lost Heaven seemingly ends on a high note, but just because Tommy’s tale is done doesn’t mean the consequences don’t find him later. Such as the case with real-life mobsters Abe Reles or Albert Anastasia. And where does he face these consequences?

Mafia II (2010):

In this game where the next protagonist, Sicilian immigrant, Vito Scaletta, takes the helm in the fictional Empire Bay, which may or may not be an amalgamation of a certain northeastern megalopolis. In all seriousness, the name immediately makes me think of New York, accents and all, but if I was a bit more well-traveled, I could probably make the case that Baltimore, Boston, and Dover are equally referenced too.

I haven’t seen any Silver or Golden Age films as of late, but one I do remember was 1933’s King Kong and all its primitive claymation ape suits, as well as 1932’s Scarface. Yeah, the 1983 one with Al Pacino is a remake of a classic. Bet you didn’t know that.

From what I remember of those films was the way the respective cities looked: the clothing, the buildings, the cars, the people and their accents, the outside world and its influence on the story–similarly, the case is felt in Mafia II. Vito says that his family moved when he was seven and he was born in 1925, which would mean he moved to the U.S. in 1932 before prohibition was repealed. He also claimed his father was an alcoholic who was probably also a frequent buyer of bootlegged booze until speakeasies were replaced by legitimate bars and taverns. Maybe some of the booze smuggled into the States made into his flask back east. Who knows?

Fast-forward to when Vito is 18, Japan had since roped the U.S. into a two-front war, and Vito’s gonna find himself on the frontlines after a robbery gone wrong. Drafted into the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment (Currahee!), Vito is specially chosen as a native Italian for the U.S. combined effort to invade Europe through Sicily, for which his unit convenes with the Italian resistance. After guest-starring in HBO’s Band of Brothers for about two years, Vito returns to Empire Bay where his best friend, Joe Barbaro, has made a name for himself amongst the cities’ wiseguys.

Joe helps Vito avoid a redeployment, probably to Germany, by forging his papers, and find more work for him to do with the wiseguys, leading to crimes of a federal degree for which Vito was initially sentenced to a decade. However, thanks to even more wiseguys already serving sentences, Vito’s time behind bars is cut short and he’s released just in time to experience the early ’50s; where the mob was still going strong and official corruption was being virulently ignored long after the prohibition days.

Vito continues riding with the Mafia, reaching made man status, and reaching his highest of highs until, like Tommy Angelo, his past catches up to him and relatively quickly as well, leading to the loss of nearly all of his fancy belongings. Unlike Tommy who was forced into the Mafia out of survival, Vito did so to get riches. He worked so hard to stave off the poverty he lived through in those tenement homes and circumstances put him back at square one.

Admittedly more self-fulfilling than Tommy who definitely had his own qualms with Mafia life, Vito takes a bunch of jobs, one of which just so happens to include (spoilers) an attempt on Tommy’s life. Mafia II starts impersonal and gradually becomes more and more about Vito. He’s clearly not the first Italian to leave Italy and join the Mob in the U.S., but all things considered, he tried to solve his lack of money problem while also clearing a standing debt with a loan shark by dashing between odd jobs, but even if he wasn’t in debt, I still see Vito mad dashing to get the dough for himself.

Mafia II is divided into chapters and the first half has a lot of time in between them. The last half of the game though is spread out through a few days, probably the longest stretch between them being at most a week or close to it, obviously for narrative purposes, signifying what’s at stake: his life. Vito’s loose ends are finally tied, but in the end, the wiseguys who helped him in prison only vouched for him, not Joe who was there by coincidence. We the audience are lead to believe that he didn’t make it, but surprisingly, he and Vito eventually make their way to the third game’s setting…

Mafia III (2016):

Now the setting is New Bordeaux, the game’s stand in for New Orleans, Louisiana and well within the civil rights era and counterculture movement of the late 1960s. This time the protagonist is an orphan named Lincoln Clay who by modern standards doesn’t meet the genealogical parameters to be considered black, having a Dominican mom and most likely Italian dad (whom fans theorized was Joe Barbaro himself), but going off face value (no pun intended), society put him into the black community who accepted him with open arms, even praying for his safety when he joined the Army and was sent to fight the Viet Cong.

His adoptive family is still there waiting for him, and he learns that they’re in trouble with a gang of Haitian descent while also being the “lapdogs” of the Italian Mafia in New Bordeaux. The antagonist, Sal Marcano, attempts to make an irrefusable offer which then gets refused and after one last job, Lincoln and his family are left for dead, setting him on a revenge quest. Continuing the theme of a living environment, the developers this time being Hangar 13 did well to capture the feeling of being non-white in the Deep South. Segregation ended federally in 1964, but the practice was still burning out years and even decades afterward, hence the the nearly 160 race riots across the U.S. in 1967, a lot of times in northern cities where segregation also existed but was outclassed by the southern way of separate but equal.

Lincoln Clay and the setting really distinguish Mafia III from the rest of the series with a brutally raw inclusion of racism as a mechanic, and it’s everywhere, from women clutching their personal bags whenever people of color walk by to stores having signs limiting or outright barring non-whites from entry and service.

The story, not including all the DLC, had been terribly undercut by the mountains worth of technical glitches on release, but ignoring the initial release’s problems, I say the game does a great job of putting the player in the shoes of those who called that a reality back in the day. My grandmother, who grew up in Virginia in the ’40s and ’50s, has a bunch of corroborating stories from the era. It reminds me of the approach taking by Max Payne 3, making Max a private bodyguard for the wealthy in South America, isolating him linguistically as he traverses the many locales of São Paulo. You are the one nail that can’t be hammered in very easily.

From Prohibition to early Cold War to civil rights, the Mafia series had a momentous evolution. As of writing this, I’m 2/3s of the way through Mafia II and I’m still at the beginning of Mafia 2002 with plans to complete them both and the third one sometime in the future. In spite of all the faults in the games, I can’t recommend enough that you experience this trilogy at least once if you haven’t already.

Sekiro and Elden Ring: My Experiences

Style plus difficulty equals banquet of substance

I’ve got another double bill for you: a pair of FromSoftware games that I’d put a substantial amount of time in and I thought I’d compare and contrast them from both my point of view and how they’re designed. Fair warning: I’m no expert on game design so don’t expect a well-informed breakdown of how XYZ works in insert game here.

I’ll start with Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

Released on March 22, 2019 for all available platforms, Sekiro is the tale of a shinobi dedicated to his lord, Divine Heir Kuro, and the dangers they face from the expected like ronin and ambitious samurai to the plausible like other contracted shinobi to the completely fantastical like ginormous creatures. Kuro’s position as the last in line of a divine lineage puts him in the crosshairs of the Ashina clan’s retainer, Ashina Genichiro, whose soul purpose in the game is to use the rejuvenating waters to revive his ailing grandfather Isshin and subsequently make the Ashina clan immortal and unite Japan under the Ashina banner.

You know, having played as the Ashikaga shogunate in EU4 and reading about the downfall of the Kamakura shogunate (and it’s most recent manga adaptation), I can’t tell what’s more sinful–Ashikaga treachery or Ashina ruthlessness.

Just goes to show that the shinobi had a better loyalty track record than the samurai. Inazo Nitobe was full of it.

I’m also going to out myself as having a lack of experience with the other FromSoft games, namely Dark Souls, so in lieu I’ll speak on the gameplay, level design, and combat I’ve witnessed. Although I’m not well-versed in the Dark Souls franchise, I’ve seen bits and pieces of gameplay here and there and from the outside looking in, it looks more like Dark Souls proper sacrifices speed for power and precision. By contrast, Sekiro seems to rely on quicker movements, agility, and a lot of times, simple tricks. Fitting for a shinobi, eh?

Dark Souls players needn’t quote me on this, but also based on what I’ve seen in gameplay and my own methods of playing Sekiro, it seems like there a more ways to cheese enemies in the game. The faster movements make it look as though there are more ways to do it, but it being a FromSoft game, wrong moves and the like will still result in the bosses planting Sekiro and seeing if a smarter shinobi grows.

Speaking of dying, Sekiro is also set apart by allowing a second chance at battle, really putting the Shadows Die Twice subtitle to use in-game. That said, reviving and dying before there’s time to recharge leads to NPCs being afflicted with a disease known as Dragonrot. It might seem like nothing to cheat death endlessly, but the energy to achieve can’t come from nothing. The way it works is that each time Sekiro flips off a shinigami, the energy required to do so draws on the healthy population, gradually sucking their life forces until they develop a hoarse cough. If it happens too often, they can die, and if I’m not mistaken, this leads to an alternate ending. Fortunately, there is a way to treat it in-game. Gathering the blood of a victim and bringing it to a doctor, Lady Emma, can help keep them alive until it happens again. So to keep it from happening again or often, git gud.

Paradoxically, Sekiro doesn’t want you to get too comfortable with the trial and error method because there are only so many times you can do that until you have to change strategies, as you’d know from any lesson on the scientific method.

Sekiro’s level design takes a page out of Spider-Man media. Plot spoiler: Sekiro loses his arm after the first encounter with Genichiro and is given a prosthetic that’s also a grappling hook. So swinging from tree to tree to rooftop and getting slashed in the face by a flying enemy feels so freeing and amazing. Sekiro is probably not the most physically imposing protagonist of all time, but he makes up for it with ninja-like reflexes you’ll definitely employ in-game. As of writing this, the furthest I got was the second encounter with Genichiro on console and I’m still near the beginning on PC, but there’s enough to glean from the combat even in the early game.

Breaking from the “one enemy attacks at a time” trope found in most media, FromSoft’s output reminds you of how special you’re not. Enemies work together to make sashimi out of your shinobi hide so living up to your reputation as a fiend from the shadows works best when it comes to clearing them all out piecemeal. Means dicks to the boss fights since they’re meant to face you upfront or at least most of them are designed to, so I guess Nitobe wasn’t completely full of s[horse neighing]t when it came to describing samurai warriors. Then again, you’re a shinobi so playing by a samurai’s rules are worthless to you. You could face them upfront the classic way, but staying in character means sneaking behind them to take off a health bar. At that point, you need only fight them once, collect a prayer bead and progress to keep on doing it.

Sekiro also caused a stink with journalists who couldn’t get through the game to review it “properly” according to their arbitrary standards, and I think someone better than me can put in extra details, especially past the second Genichiro encounter, but for what it’s worth, if you’ve been putting off Sekiro for whatever reason, but really wanted to play it, I can’t recommend it enough. My best way to describe it as easy lessons, hard application.

Now for the other FromSoft game: Elden Ring.

Released on February 25, 2022, Elden Ring made a meme of itself rather quickly by wheelbarrowing in its gargantuan balls and declaring everyone to be maidenless gits. Well, screw you too, Discount Wales! I’m gonna go in and Margit threw me off a cliff.

That did happen to me in Elden Ring. I summoned some help and got thrown off the cliffside. But I kept going in until I won. Gittin gud, folks!

Working with the few memories I have of Dark Souls gameplays, I’d say Elden Ring is the closest to form without actually being Dark Souls in name. Classes to choose from, customizable character, in-depth story about constructing the titular item, ruined medieval European-inspired castles, spirit steed, bosses that can sleep you in one hit; rings a lot of bells, but without the proper experience I hesitate to definitively say they’re Dark Souls bells. Regardless, one thing I forgot to mention that both Sekiro and Elden Ring do is allow players to leave messages to each other, though Sekiro does it differently by showing instead of telling.

Dodge-rolling has made a comeback in Elden Ring and dodging a titanic swing and countering with a slash at the ankles feels right. Between these two, they crank up the difficulty to make the victories that much more rewarding. I genuinely get a kick out of beating a boss after getting planted enough times to make a forest of bodies. I have less time with Elden Ring, but as I said there’s a lot to extrapolate in a short time with the game. Toss away the shinobi-like agility and speed and the slower movements are because your character is covered head to toe in armor… unless you’re the solo guy.

Well, it’s not like there’s a wrong way to play games anymore. Nonlinear structures of this type encourage creativity and I’d like to be the fly on the wall of the player who found all the exploits first before sharing them with the internet.

As far as hard games go, both Sekiro and Elden Ring have the difficulty found in a FromSoft product, both cannot stress enough the importance of the parry, and both give you enough tools to play how you see fit with a few bosses having a method that makes them easier to deal with. In Sekiro’s field, sometimes you can just rack up a kill count and take the ryo that drops from enemies ’til you reach the desired amount to buy from a merchant; and other times you can eavesdrop on loudmouthed enemies and discover new weapons by simply waiting and listening for more details. For the most part in Elden Ring, I’ve found extra accessories from fallen enemies. I haven’t used the merchants yet, but based on my play style I might never get/have to. Even in video games, I’m a great big cheapskate.

One main element in Elden Ring is that the titular artifact is fragmented and scattered across the game world, sort of like the jewel shards in Inuyasha. Finding them is “easy,” it just takes getting past the boss fights to get them. Once constructed, the Elden Ring is said to grant the wielder great power. So like Sekiro, there’s a powerful object that both sides want and depending on how the stories for both goes, the protagonists of both will realize that no one is meant to have that power and let it be, or they take the power and use the godly powers for good instead of evil.

I will peak ahead to see what I’m up against, but that’s the most I’ll do for spoiling myself–knock on wood. All I can say with certainty is that I have a long way to go.

Another spoiler: I never made it past Genichiro, Way of Tomoe on console.

As the title suggest, Meshida is a Japanese comedian. He said goodbye to salaryman life and chose laughter as a full-time job. His brand of comedy briefly explains Japanese society while at the same time taking the piss out of it. If satire is the best way to critique while also wishing for improvements, then I say keep it going.

Evan Wright’s Generation Kill

War journalism brought to life

I’m doing something different this week. It had come to light that the author of the novel Generation Kill, Evan Wright, had taken his life on July 12, 2024 at the age of only 59. I’ll be upfront and say that I lack the expertise to deal with a subject as delicate as suicide and the most I can do for those who’ve fought or are currently fighting those demons is direct them to crisis prevention organizations and hotlines, which I feel would come across as hollow since anyone can do those things.

Instead, I’d like to do something that I think would be more thoughtful and remember Wright by his work, namely the novel that I’d had a lot of time reading and it’s TV miniseries adaptation: Generation Kill.

My introduction to the book was a bit of a cascade. I first heard of it through reviews of the miniseries of the same name, licensed by HBO in 2008. It got a brief mention in Knowing Better’s video on his own service in the U.S. Army, where he said it was as accurate a depiction of the average servicemember as one could get, next to actually signing up.

Yeah, the subject matter means you’d have to view it on the site. Good viewing if you have 1.5 hours to spare.

To summarize it, Evan Wright was attached to the Marines’ 1st Recon Battalion during the invasion of Iraq in 2003, documenting every single action of the jarheads from actual combat operations to random silliness and off-color conversations carried in their off time. Anyone whose exposure to military operations is limited only to Hollywood would be surprised to learn how juvenile and sophomoric the humor can get, but to circle back to something Knowing Better said in a different video, the military doesn’t influence Hollywood. It’s often the other way around, and this makes a lot of sense if you think about it. Just because you wear camouflage and a helmet doesn’t mean you’re not also a nerd about something. And in my own little circle, the Army’s Signal Corps has a bunch of sci-fi fans interspersed with weebs, two things I happen to be as evidenced by all my blog posts.

I can’t speak for every veteran, but from what I’ve heard and read, military media gets a lot of scrutiny from these groups. Living day-to-day in the military trains you to pick through every detail with a fine-tooth comb, and the small details often make or break a piece of media for a servicemember. There’s a bunch of regulations on how things should look and how to behave or react or respond to fire. No matter the branch, the US military follows the rules of engagement to heart. As a result, there’s loads of ire launched at films like The Hurt Locker whereas In the Army Now, Black Hawk Down, or even Saving Private Ryan get praise not just for the storytelling but the miniscule details that vets and servicemembers would notice from a mile away. A single deviation from the standard tells them all they need to know about how much or how little the producers cared about the subject matter.

Because Evan Wright saw the Marines fight tooth and nail to capture and secure Baghdad, he had earned himself a lot of respect from military vets and the community on a wide scale for sticking his neck out, even if he didn’t have to. That said, war journalism is nothing to scoff at. It’s a serious and dangerous branch of journalism that can and does kill the reporters on scene. In just the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, little more than a dozen war correspondents have come under fire, some of them fatally and more may follow as the conflict progresses. Both sides know who their enemy is, but the tools of war are themselves not loyal to a flag, president, or even constitution. A pen isn’t going to miss you if it gets lost in your house and in a similar vein, a rocket’s area of impact largely depends on the capabilities of the mapper; and even then the enemy isn’t a guaranteed hit. Sometimes friendlies or civilians get caught in the crossfire.

Wright and countless others in his position knew this prior to going into the conflict zone and many more following such examples will take that to heart before stepping off attached to a unit in the field.

It’s worth mentioning that popular as the book was and still is, it wasn’t controversy-free. Some of the Marines at the center of the book faced backlash initially until 1st Recon commanders intervened and advocated for firsthand viewership of the book. A few of those same Marines even helped with the miniseries adaptation in 2008 and starred as themselves in the show during its run. Even now, over a decade and a half later, Generation Kill gets praise for its reporting and up close depiction of the lower enlisted as they were neck deep in the fight between the Iraqi Army, Saddam’s Republican Guard, and the Fedayeen death squads.

Speaking of which, another thing the book and series does well is display the troubles of modern warfare. The early stages of the War on Terror were wrought with controversy and opposition most of which still lives on to this day in the form of popular myths. In the case of the Iraq War specifically, some of those concerns centered around fighting an atypical war against a largely faceless adversary. Loose groups of terror cells in dangerous parts of the world made fighting the war incredibly difficult and complicated with some groups fighting each other and their listed enemies, the West being among them.

Because they were often dressed casually or “plainclothes,” picking apart friend from foe turned into a clusterf[boots stomping]k of massive proportion. The rules of engagement weren’t always applicable to the situation. Common sense isn’t common or even as widely available as we wish it were, that’s why there’ve been travesties, many of which don’t make it to screens and newsprint often until years after the fact, since empathizing with both the warfighters and the victims of oppression is a balancing act. Protesting wars is old — I don’t know how old — but I know that when a line is crossed, the aggravated public gets restless if in a democracy. It might have something to do with war correspondents having widespread freedom of information, but I think it’s safe to say that the public discourse against the military reached its zenith during the Vietnam War.

You may not know it, but this man helped put an end to a war crime… and he was essentially laughed into depressive episodes for “snitching” on his criminal comrades.

Wright’s novel and the miniseries based on it show how complicated even “black-and-white” wars can get. What becomes of the civilians involved? How do you treat non-uniformed combatants? How do you atone for devastating mishaps? Questions and dilemmas like these are what make and break people in war, whether they’re fighting it or just witnessing it. Often, it’s the sword of Damocles problem–the blade changes position with every move a leader makes, and sometimes there are hard logistical choices you have to make in modern wars. Slight spoiler: one scene in the miniseries depicts the Marines deliberating on whether to bring civilians with them, but the idea is (no pun intended) shot down to the dangers of having civilians in tow, as Wright himself could attest. But there were equally bad if not worse consequences for sending them on their way, that being the Fedayeen death squads mowing down suspected traitors of Saddam.

This article on Military.com has more to say about Evan Wright’s professional work away from Generation Kill, but adding to the praise, I like how honest and unjudgmental it is. It gives you as many of the facts as can be recalled while letting the audience see inside the mind of a young Marine ready to let ‘er rip in a combat zone.

Undead Unluck Anime Adaptation

Ah, f[swords clashing]k it. I’ve been putting it off long enough and my desire for perfection is clashing with my schedule so, I’m bringing the long-awaited opinion on the anime adaptation of Undead Unluck. Still got a few episodes left in this season, but I’ve reviewed anime halfway through before so there’s no reason to hold this one to a higher standard.

Immortality Misfortune is the story of a man who’s chronologically so old, his birthday is on a different calendar system going on a journey with Japan’s millionth unlucky female protagonist on a quest for the best death the world can offer. It was picked up by Viz Media in January 2020 for weekly distribution in the west and I’ve been keeping up with it leading up to my first try at Army basic training. I’m still following along to the best of my ability, and yes I still recommend the manga.

For the anime, it was picked up by David Production, the same craftspeople responsible for bringing JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure to stunning life after 25 years in limbo and Fire Force, only for that to be delayed by a few weeks due to the tragedy at KyoAni in July 2019. It’s not often that a manga I follow closely gets this treatment, but the industry seems to be enjoying a boost as of late with more and more manga I find getting adaptations later. Speaking of which, The Elusive Samurai’s next episode should be airing right now so a review of that will arrive in time. I will try my best not to delay it as long as I’ve done with this one.

Considering the year of release of the manga and that of the anime, Deathless 13 went through a few changes since it takes place in the modern era. COVID had a slight influence on the first episode as the female MC, Fuuko Izumo, was all by herself before attempting to try her own hand at death, whereas in the manga, there was a crowd gathered attempting to stop her. Then deuteragonist, Andy, shows up attempting to do the same but in style.

The series likes to have a ton of fun with body horror considering the premise: a select group of people possess supernatural abilities that negate the laws of physics. What anyone else can do normally, these “Negators” can do the opposite, hence the abilities like Untouch, Undead, Unstoppable, Unchange, Unmove, etc. No, it doesn’t match with how English works, but longtime weebs know the difficulties of accurate localizations.

A small group of Negators, known as The Union, have made it their mission to uncover the mysteries of the world they live in by challenging God himself. Many obstacles stand in their way, those being the UMAs or Unidentified Mysterious Anomalies/Animals. These beings have an adverse affect of some kind on the rest of the planet and are due in large part to The Union’s performance in the field. If successful, the repercussions are negated and things return to their normal state; but if they fail, the consequences become part of nature, in some cases permanently. Sacrifices tend to be made in order for The Union to reach their goal.

Having followed the series for the better part of 3.5 years, I recall some panels that would look astounding if animated because the action within is limited by the medium it originated from.

Of course, not every manga has that luxury, as Berserk fans know very well. When I learned that DP would be captaining the ship, I recalled their expertise in animation with JoJo, Fire Force and several other series and rested easy that night confident that their ethos of quality animation would not have to suffer. The studio promised us the Sistine Chapel once again and their hard work has paid off. Better yet, no one was breathing down their necks to meet an arbitrary standard so prepare yourselves, people. For the chefs have cooked another perfect dish.

I personally didn’t have much issue with the Stone Ocean adaptation, but I understand the argument that there was interference.

DP’s attention to details is one for the textbooks. Watching Andy regenerate severed limbs and such is phenomenal, and whatever confusion there was about how this world works is enhanced with the motion of all the pictures. No more flipping through pages for visual learners.

Having said that though, much of the series makes it a candidate for the mystery genre. Discoveries are being made all the time, characters keep their pasts well-hidden, motives change regularly, and the changes that influence the world can only be explained by a handful of people. I’d say it meets those prerequisites well with what I remember about it.

I can’t recommend enough that you check out the anime yourself. The manga got back on its feet a while back after a subpar arc, but with the anime adaptation in tow, it’s more than worth the watch. It’s available in dub and sub on Hulu and you already know what I like to frequent.

The Tragedy of Act-Age

Gone… reduced to atoms

Years ago as a college student, I’ve spent a handful of late nights scouring the Internet for content in between school days. I’ve spent these nights viewing the Pink Floyd movie, rewatching Naruto: Shippuden to fill in the gaps I missed while watching Boruto (finally find out what happened to Danzo), and in this case, reading the manga Act-Age, written by Tatsuya Matsuki, illustrated by Shiro Usazaki.

I remember the marketing on the Viz Media site as a story of an orphaned girl named Kei Yonagi who is left to raise her little siblings all by herself. To that end, she seeks the path of an actress and discovers that her natural talent for the art of acting is above and beyond what most would expect, even by method or character acting standards. Essentially, she reminds me a bit of Christian Bale’s dedication to his roles.

Now, as a viewer, my knowledge on the acting industry comes from research and stories, made-up and real. As far as I know, there’s a bunch of moving parts that the average person will likely never see unless they enter the field themselves or something like a scandal pops up, the latter of the two being quite commonplace in Hollywood. I can’t say for sure if similar practices exist in acting in Japan or anywhere else in the world, but I wouldn’t put it past anyone. Every organization thinks they’re normal and everyone else is weird. Maybe one day, I’ll make it a blog post.

In the manga, a lot of the ins and outs of acting as a whole are present, but one of the main selling points was the mental health aspect. Show business is a cutthroat industry to break into and has been that way ever since the Ancient Greeks were pioneering and perfecting theater and stage. It’d be something to be the fly on the wall of the original Antigone play.

Act-Age ran from January 2019 until its untimely cancellation in August 2020. Millions of views across 123 chapters, 107 of them collected into book format, spread over 12 chapters with only 2 of them in English, so basically, if that person is you, depending on how you feel about it you practically have gold or pyrite. But I’m jumping the gun.

This blog post explains that the manga is atypical for a Shonen manga at face value, trading physical punches for mental attacks, but after reading through the article, it makes sense. The term battle tends to get used quite loosely these days. Stretching the definition to any kind of struggle, physical or mental, works well in this case because Kei does undergo her own internal struggles while acting or at home. Mental strength is something that I don’t see get praised in the animanga sphere all that much outside of horror. If anyone has any recommendations that fit this mold, do share. I’d like to expand my horizons.

Memorable characters, challenging story arcs, mental fortitude and an inside look at the acting industry (at least on the Japanese side of things); all of these are a smash hit manga make. Probably even an anime adaptation, but it sadly wasn’t meant to be. The manga got the axe when Matsuki was caught performing a heinous crime on middle school girls, and everything associated with the manga was halted, including a planned stage play. As for Usazaki, she was asked whether she wanted to continue the series without Matsuki and she understandably chose not to. So Shueisha and Viz Media both shelved it for good and any and all mention of the series has been s[metal banging]t-canned for good, save for blogs like this that occasionally dig through the annals and archives to write about the tragedy that was Act-Age.

S[clapperboard]t like this makes it even harder to be a weeb. Explaining away weird plot points and out of context images/scenes is very fun and hilarious. It gets all the more dark when the series in question is in some capacity tainted by something the author did. Normally, I have no problem splitting the art from the artist, but with debates like that–and you may have your own concepts about the matter–I think it depends on the attachment between the art and the artist. I remember reading Joe Bonanno’s autobiography A Man of Honor and in that he claimed to have met the likes of Errol Flynn, praising his acting prowess but chastising him as a person, especially with how he treated women. Similarly, I think the Rolling Stones would be directionless without Mick Jagger, or that John Lennon was something of a lyrical genius, but at best it’s creepy that Jagger’s lovers are much younger than him, and at worst Lennon’s romantic life gets less and less opaque the more you read into it. Or just listen to “Run For Your Life” and pay attention to the lyrics.

Most licensed manga hosting sites have done away with the manga, especially Viz Media, out of respect for victims and survivors. I doubt it exists even on pirate sites, making it a candidate for deliberate lost media, where a work is purposely excluded from anything capable of archiving it. As I said, depending on your stance, if you managed to save the chapters for private viewing you may have gold or pyrite.

Act-Age, during serialization, was proof that it could work and was on its way to become the next big thing. There may be an alternate timeline where Matsuki wasn’t a s[horse neighing]t heel and it’s still in publication with its distinctive writing and art aesthetics, but no one can say for sure where it would be now. Maybe like Undead Unluck, it’d suffer a slump until a later arc revived it, or the anime adaptation saved it. Who knows?

But a light exists at the end of the tunnel for the original team that worked on Act-Age. For instance, Usazaki walked away from the project to work on other stuff, be it magazine covers or her very own one-shot manga. Haibane Renmei and Mysterious Disappearances: Mystery Double Bill

The long-awaited two-in-one special

I put this off for a week so I could do some more research on both, by which I mean reading the Wikipedia page for one and advancing in the manga for the other. Haibane Renmei is but a short 1-cour anime series from 2002. I found out about it from the same article that introduced me to House of Five Leaves a few years ago (along with another one), and without delving into details, a friend of mine challenged me to recommend him some anime he’s never heard of. Well, he didn’t challenge me per se, but I took it as such and I figured I might as well put another brick in this anime wall I chose to build. No, it still ain’t finished.

Japanese for Charcoal Feather Federation, Haibane Renmei starts with a young girl experiencing a very vivid dream about falling from the sky. This being the only memory she has, the theme of the series is that the Haibane–angel-like beings–are named after the dream they had. Shortly after that, their wings grow from their back and they’re given halos to wear above their heads.

It was based on an unfinished manuscript by the same mind responsible for the surprisingly well-aged Serial Experiments Lain, which when it comes to trying to label it, makes it difficult, at least for me. There’s anime that are adapted from manga, which is the most common adaptation style; anime that are adapted from light novels, which is probably the second most common adaptation style; sometimes anime are home grown originals (a.k.a. anime originals), proof that the studios animating them can make something special from thin air; and sometimes anime are adapted from novels:

It’s definitely irregular for a rough draft to get a green light for an adaptation, but it’s not like it’s unheard of. Stranger things have happened in media.

Part of my research for Haibane Renmei involved looking over this blog post from 2017. The writer explains that the cult-classic series has been the topic of such fierce debate over the meaning of the series, not helped by Yoshitoshi Abe’s notoriously enigmatic writing style. As a mystery series, this can be viewed as a double entendre both due to the cryptic writing and because the only source available lies with the writer and short of booking a flight to Japan to ask him directly, I highly doubt he’s ready to share the raw words with a wider audience so the anime adaptation had to make do.

That said, this isn’t the type of Scooby-Doo, CSI, Columbo type mystery series where you’re given a puzzle to solve. It leaves a lot open to interpretation and according to that post I linked above, a lot of it tends to be incorrect. From a writer’s perspective, there’s a fine line between treating the audience like they’re five years old and throwing them out of a plane and expecting them to catch the parachute on the way down.

Is this me being too harsh? Perhaps, but the creative world is pretty cutthroat in a manner of speaking. We criticize ourselves in a much harsher tone than any other critic, yet both the critic and the artist are given a near equal amount of outside exposure so doesn’t that mean we’re both talented groups of people?

Something, something pot calls the kettle black…

I like to think of it as an art house project. I believe the late 90s to late 2000s was the era of moe and this series does something different from most shows of the era. It was the equivalent of taking an extended museum tour and filling out a survey at the end before being released to the gift shop. It’s for thinkers; the door is open enough for observers to take a peek but is neither too wide nor too narrow. If it were too wide, important stuff goes missing, but if it were too narrow then you wouldn’t be able to see the contents very well. It sits neatly in the middle and once you’re done with the series you can walk away with your own interpretations of what you think the series is about. Here’s a link to the playlist. From a series you probably never heard of before now to a series you still probably haven’t heard of unless you eat anime memes like black beans: Mysterious Disappearances.

Before I elaborate on this series, I want to get this out of the way right now: giant boobs.

Alright, we’re done with that. Well, I’m done with that aspect. Explaining the fanservice in this series will honestly get redundant especially since both the anime and the manga do that in spades. The first chapter especially ends with an uncensored shower scene (spoiler alert).

As for the rest of the series, Mysterious Disappearances is a blending together of urban legend and centuries-old Japanese folktales. The name doesn’t do the series enough justice. Looking to legends and myths for inspiration, Mysterious Disappearances has it all in droves. The first episode actually drops hints from an old urban legend about the fictional haunted Kisaragi Station. Akidearest explains it further in this video below:

Basically, a few years ago, a Japanese vocaloid YouTuber’s videos spread by way of the recommendation system and the one thing that stood out was that their username and videos were mostly untitled, making use of zero width non-joiners or “invisible characters” read only by the computer. Anyway, the video referenced an old urban legend/creepypasta that only existed at the time on Japanese forums, namely 2chan in 2004. The urban legend in question was Kisaragi Station and was about a woman who noticed the train continued on for longer than usual. She gets off at the namesake station which was left unmapped and catalogs all of her interactions and findings at the phantom station, even wandering the tunnels until she was eventually picked up by a mysterious man who quickly dropped his helpful demeanor once she took the bait. Forums posters eagerly awaited for updates that never came after that.

This was one of several references to Japanese urban legend in the anime. Many more follow as the series progresses. Unlike The Society of Gray Feathers, Dangerous and Disturbing Puzzles has more exposition baked into it. Both the manga and the anime explore the phenomena as they happen. Part of the appeal for me is the urban legend side of things. Fictional or not, these ghost stories tend to be somewhat credible even if they don’t match beat for beat. They’re the fun little stories about things that go bump in the night. The supernatural element keeps me engaged, much like when I was first introduced to The Adventures of Shigeo Kageyama: Boy ESPer.

The protagonist is the big breasted woman we saw earlier, Sumireko Ogawa, a novelist working in a bookstore. Aided by her coworker Ren Adashino and his sister Oto, the trio investigate and confront the sources of the mysteries personally, unraveling their secrets along the way.

One of the main plot devices is a droplifted book picked up by the bookstore owner himself and gifted to Ogawa on her birthday. The anonymous writer catalogued ancient poems from the real-life Manyoshu, a collection of anonymously written Japanese poems going all the way back to the Nara period (circa 750s C.E.). If read aloud, the poems act as a spell cast on the reader themselves provided certain conditions are met. The “spell” can be broken by way of reading the poem backwards, but as shown in the series, when Ogawa does so, she’s able to control the effects of the poems on herself at will.

Other important plot devices are the siblings themselves and the signs that only they can see: yellow diamonds with exclamation points in the middle. They appear whenever a supernatural event has occurred. Once the event has been solved, the siblings are shown to use anything recovered from their findings as payment for tickets back to their own home through–you’ll never guess–Kisaragi station! It all comes together! There’s a lot more to this, though I haven’t gotten that far yet and the manga is still ongoing so it’ll be years before we see where the author, Nujima, is taking this series.

What is certain though is that for those who like creepypasta fanservice and closeup shot style fanservice are going to be intrigued by the blend here. It seems quite ridiculous to highlight Ogawa’s body as the connecting element when Ogawa herself is the protagonist, but the series finds a way to make it work. Rather than fall into the age-old trap of “damsel in distress,” Ogawa being the adult amongst the children here gives her more of a leg up as the woman in charge here. You could argue that she’s technically the mother figure based on this description, but the counterargument to that is that while the three do work together, they’re not inseparable.

Scenes exist with all of them together or just one of them alone or with other minor characters. All of them are well-written with their own goals and desires and none of them feels as though they’re held up by the other. That it’s mainly psychological horror is another plus for me. Honestly, I would’ve been turned off by anything horror as a kid, but now that I’m an adult and I’ve watched a few of the classic horror movies before they were ruined by their own franchising (Friday the 13th, Halloween, Scream, etc.), I realized that there’s still better ways to horror and thriller and Mysterious Disappearances is a better example of that.

All 12 episodes are available on Crunchyroll, but if you don’t feel like watching 12 of the same old advertisements, then you already know what I’m gonna say.

Because I’m behind schedule, I doubt I can guarantee a full review of Undead Unluck season 1 by the 30th, not to mention another topic lined up was pushed back due to the research I did for these two series in this post, so instead I’ll try to get back on track either the 29th (tomorrow) or sometime during the 4th of July weekend. The next topic I have concerns a manga that never got off the ground. Here’s a sneak-peek:

The Sims Competitor That Almost Was

I’m still hard at work getting the research ready for the next set of topics, Undead Unluck, as well as a double bill between an old anime that flew under the radar (fitting for this one specifically) and a more recent one that wrapped up not that long ago. This and some other stuff in my professional life are why I missed my deadline. I’ll do my best to get the Undead Unluck review out before the end of the month as I’ve said before or during the 4th of July weekend, preferably the former so we can all kick back with our friends that weekend. So I offer you a quick post here as a supplement to what I’d normally post. Also I think we could use a quick break from all the anime posts as of late.

What we’re shifting to now is video games. Specifically, life simulators like The Sims series and the topic of this post, a would-be competitor that was supposed to knock them down a peg this year: Life by You.

As a user of Reddit, one of the subreddits on my feed is r/TheSims, where users either showcase the strange happenings in their respective games, news from EA concerning the series, or simply airing their grievances against the latest installment, The Sims 4. I’ve seen them myself and have been both a supporter and critic of many of these grievances. It may be because I’m used to not having a lot, but of the things to complain about, only a select few are worth crying over; the rest of the dreck is borne from Reddit’s diva-itis. Then again, like most users, I have mods installed to add more spice to my saves, so this is part of what I see as valid.

Occasionally, there’s spillover of other life sim subs. For a while, there were a lot of posts on the sub about a potential competitor called Paralives. It’s still in development, but so far is promising a lot of the features that seem to be missing from The Sims 4, especially at launch ten years ago. Life by You promised much of the same things, and with Paradox spearheading the project, Paradox veterans would probably expect the same gameplay styles familiar with any of their games… or so you’d think.

Moving away from action-packed map staring and manipulation of geography, Paradox was teasing the project for about a year, and there were signs all around that this was an ambitious project for them specifically. Not exactly the first time a city/country/empire-builder studio tried this, ironically The Sims began when the lead designer was inspired to focus more on the people whilst developing the next installment of SimCity. Funny how this all comes together, right?

I can’t say whether the case was similar for Paradox, but it seems like lightning failed to strike the same spot twice. The original reveal and release date was pushed back multiple times, from late 2023 to March 2024 to June until Paradox unfortunately pulled the plug on the project once and for all. I’m tempted to say that it was far too ambitious and Paradox’s standards got in the way, but that sounds a bit harsh and a little accusatory. This company pushes out quality games regularly, they’re shown to be one of the few devs still supporting their games, even years after they release and have a more devil-may-care attitude towards mods. In my experience, they support and implore modders and programmers to share their works for other players to experience. Get yourself a quality computer and you too can experience your fellow gamers’ creativity.

Note that I’m not at all saying that Paradox should stay in their lane. I love it when people try something they normally wouldn’t do. I find it inspiring that risks are being taken, even if they don’t always pan out. It’s terribly unfortunate that they had to bury the project and effectively hand EA Maxis another W, but I remain optimistic for Paradox.

I’m not personally looking for a competitor to The Sims; I would’ve played it even if it wasn’t aiming to dethrone The Sims. I remember writing last year about the cancelled MK: Shaolin Monks sequel and Shaolin Monks itself. As I recall, part of the gameplay was inspired by the semi-RPG elements in MK: Deception’s Konquest mode. Whatever Paradox does next, it’s highly possible that they’re going to salvage what they learned and what worked with Life by You and implement it in the next project they launch.

As I’ve stated before, my gears turn relatively slowly, but only because I want a clearer picture to work with before I start writing. If this post seems briefer than what I normally produce, in this case, the news of the subject is still being written even as this is complete, meanwhile Shaolin Monks was released in 2005, giving me nearly two decades worth of research for me to use.

I’ll try not to make this a regular occurrence in the future, but the nature of my work won’t make that a guarantee. I may make an update in the future on the game or Paradox itself as time goes on. For now, the double bill is still in the drafting stage and should be up by Friday evening or Saturday.

Azumanga Daioh: A Classic

Calling back to a recent post, I once again searched for anime to watch on a whim and with how easy it is to pirate and upload on YouTube (for a time at least), my search led me to another series that needs no introduction: Azumanga Daioh.

A four-panel manga series running from 1999 to 2002, Kiyohiko Azuma’s famous series is about a group of girls navigating their high school and personal lives, with occasional peeks into the lives of two of their teachers. Its anime adaptation follows the manga nearly beat for beat in the sense that every episode is split into different segments. Four-panel manga all have the same layout and are most commonly found in comedy manga series like Azumanga, and are not limited only to Japan. Western comics also have the formula down pat if you’ve ever read the comic strips in newspapers.

As far as plot is concerned, Azumanga is a slice of life series under the “Cute Girls Doing Cute Things” umbrella, a legacy of its era in the moe blob of the 90s going into the 2000s. From start to finish, the manga panels have the star characters and their friends doing really uninteresting stuff, but often in a comedic way. The anime is the same, and having seen it from start to finish the anime translates the humor quite well to the small screen.

But it still requires a working knowledge of Japanese culture and comedy to understand why it’s like this. Going in blind may not leave as much of an impression compared to going in with this knowledge. The cultural barrier was still standing strong in 2002, and a problem one can see at least with the dub is an old bugbear that only exists when trying to view older anime dubbed in English: poor translations.

One of the strongest concerns in the dub vs sub debate online is whether the translators/localizers, etc. can correctly interpret the scenes and localize them for western audiences without doing away with the original context and humor. Numerous examples of poor translations in the early days exist, but one that makes the rounds regularly online is the Pokémon scene where Brock shares his onigiri rice balls.

By now, everyone has seen onigiri. When it comes to cultural boundaries breaking apart, food also plays a role in that–not just language or history. The faulty dubbing issue isn’t as persistent as it was back in the day, but the concern still exists for many anime fans in the form of internet/video game slang showing up in the subtitles. Personally, I see why this specifically can ruffle some feathers since more and more people watch anime these days and may not always be the same people browsing social media regularly.

From my perspective, Azumanga has a few of these issues here and there, but they didn’t stop me from watching it all the way to the end. As a matter of fact, this series and Azuma’s other series, Yotsuba to!, are a pair of internet darlings. The off-color humor in both series is a source of numerous memes and no-context compilations of the funniest moments from the Azumanga anime due to the style of surreal comedy employed.

Humor like this can show the author’s attention to detail, especially when a seemingly unimportant gag or detail returns in a later episode or two.

Of course, the series isn’t just a barrel of laughs from start to finish. The characters all share intimate moments between each other and in their own personal lives. The character, Yomi, for example is featured in the opening weighing herself, highlighting an insecurity that gets light in the series. Chiyo, being the youngest character, has big shoes to fill with being gifted enough to attend high school at the age of 10. Osaka, real name Ayumu Kasuga, is the outsider, the awkward round peg outnumbered by a bunch of square holes. Her nickname is based on her home city of Osaka and the general perception non-Osakans have of the locals in that prefecture, sorta like how in the U.S. everyone has perceptions of everyone else based on what state they’re from.

Little moments like these help to flesh the characters out and with a small cast to work with, Azuma wasn’t as bogged down trying to give everyone the time of day. This doesn’t necessarily mean that smaller casts are better, but that it takes real care to ensure everyone in a work of fiction is given a piece of the pie. It isn’t always perfect and it doesn’t always need to be as long as all loose ends are tied up. Thankfully, the details in the series are all easy to keep track of through easy-to-remember clauses: one likes animals and tries to pet a finnicky alley cat; one is extra hyper and loaded with energy; one is prone to zoning out at random; one is a sports fanatic; and the list goes on.

Azumanga Daioh is the type of series that one can sit down and relax and have a few laughs while watching these girls go through high school. Its last episode is a neat and tidy conclusion that offers thanks to the viewers as a final goodbye, though I see myself going back for little things in the show.

If the playlist was still available in the English dub I’d provide a link but sadly, the channel that had all 26 episodes dubbed has been removed as of writing this. There still exists the subbed versions on YouTube and the good old-fashioned eyepatch wearing, peg legged, hook hand approach to viewing this series.

With any luck I’ll finally get done with the Undead Unluck anime and provide my thoughts. I’ll do what I can to have it out before the end of the month.

The Elusive Samurai Anime Adaptation Confirmed

A manga I’m following is greenlit

Long time followers of this blog may recall when I reviewed the manga The Elusive Samurai or Nige Jouzu no Wakagimi by Yusei Matsui, the same man responsible for My Teacher is a World-Ending Tentacle Monster?!

The Light-footed Hojo debuted in January of 2021 and I had been following it for months leading up to my first enlistment. Even now I still read it whenever I get the chance and a lot has transpired within the manga. Enough that there’s a whole time skip arc after 3.5 years in publication.

Now I come to report on an update regarding the manga, in that it joins my small but not insignificant list of manga I’m reading that is also getting an anime adaptation. So far, that makes this the fourth time it’s happened, the first three being, Demons Deserve Death, Gyarus of Hokkaido and Immortal Misfortune.

It started with a teaser sometime last year around the same time I actually reviewed the original manga before hibernating until now. With more time to simmer, it was now revealed to us further that the studio meant to bring life to this manga is none other than CloverWorks, the same studio that brought us many a work including but not limited to Bunny Girl Senpai, Spy x Family, Bocchi the Rock, Dress Up Darling, and several of the Fate adaptations.

An impressive repository of series to check out, right? That said, even godly studios have their off times and CloverWorks has made a few mistakes. We can each point to a studio and wonder what went wrong with XYZ and the number one anime to get brutally slaughtered without sound reason is:

An interesting cutesy horror story comparable to that of Made in Abyss, and interestingly another one I skipped over yonks ago to get to other manga I was and am still reading, Boruto and My Hero Academia: Vigilantes being among them.

I did watch all of season 1 when it premiered on Toonami years ago and I was planning on catching up with season 2, but knowing what became of that by word of mouth, to do so would be to waste time spent on other anime that’s worth my time. Namely:

I’ve still not started Season 3 yet, but now that it’s concluded, I can watch at my own pace.

For years since it’s conclusion readers have wondered why The Promised Neverland’s second season was so lackluster and divorced from the manga. I also occasionally try to look for answers and the most I get is mild speculation. I can’t say for certain how tight-lipped studios can be or will be about these sorts of things, especially Japanese studios, but with the news that studios like MAPPA have developed a crunch culture not seen since Team Bondi’s efforts to burn the candle at both ends or ufotable pulling an Al Capone tax-wise, there probably aren’t that many things besides language and traditions that separate Japanese animation studios from western ones.

Having said that, CloverWorks is one of the best studios in production today, standing tall with KyoAni, Pierrot, and David Production, and with more successes than failures to boast, especially in recent memory, I’ve no reason to believe CW will louse this up, even through malice, though a more mature way to look at it is that weirder stories have come from the animation industry and if it happens during the production of The Last of the Hojo, I’m damned sure gonna write about it. Bet on it.

For now, the scheduled date is July 6, 2024. I will save a spot for a first impression.

Date A Live: On a Whim Again

The life I live is watching anime with friends…

…and I can’t wait to do it on a whim again. I’m not apologizing for that Willie Nelson reference.

Date A Live honestly needs no introduction. It’s a series that I’d heard of for a couple years prior to actually watching it only to hear of a fourth season planned last year while I was already six episodes into the series.

It began life as a light novel with a run from March 2011 to March 2020, exactly nine years of writing from author Koshi Tachibana. A sci-fi fantasy romcom whose anime adaptation was released in 2013 and whose fifth season debuted in April of this year. Funny that light novels from the last decade are going strong in the 2020s.

So what’s Date A Live really about? Breaking it down by its genres, the sci-fi aspect comes from the world itself. It’s somewhat set in the future though no specifics are given so you the reader/viewer may fill in the blanks how you see fit. Spatial quakes or tremors in the solar system start affecting earth in a very negative manner, by way of leaving behind giant craters in the earth, one of the most notable being somewhere along the Eurasian steppe. Bad day to be wandering around Kazakhstan that day.

The in-universe explanation for this is that the space tremors follow the arrival of beings known as Spirits who all appear in the form of girls around the same age as the main character, Shido Itsuka–and protagonist powers aside he does have a crucial role that I’ll get to later.

Further, these Spirits possess abnormal powers, not the least of which involves the likes superhuman strength and devastating abilities the likes of which would make Babidi from Dragon Ball very, very jealous–and also ties in with the fantasy aspect of the series. There are two ways to combat these Spirits: one is by way of actual combat; and the other adds in the romance aspect and our main protagonist, Shido Itsuka.

Now that we’re putting two and two to get to four, you may have predicted that Shido’s task in this series is to romance the Spirits and prevent utter bedlam with the power of love, and you’d be right. The harem aspect is well advertised and if you know a few things about the harem genre in animanga, then you’re probably also aware of the main selling point: fanservice. Flash a boob once or twice, get some cheeky panty shots in, throw in an accidental pervert with multiple different -dere types and voila! you’re cooking a mean beef stew.

However, what I think separates Date A Live from contemporaries of this type would have to be the individual girls themselves. Even as I’ve only just wrapped up the second season of the anime, I’m seeing more than just comedically sexy eye candy. And I’ll even throw a bone to Shido himself. Rather than be just the generic harem protagonist who behaves as a stand-in for the audience, there is a personality to the boy for once. He’s shown to be persuasive and caring, especially since his position in the series is that of nonviolence. He’s basically playing the pacifist route in Undertale.

Meanwhile, the other main adversary present aside from rogue Spirits yet to be wooed by our hunk Shido is the Anti-Spirit Team. Similar to Japanese Special Forces, their purpose is to find and contain the damage the Spirits cause, a lot of the time through lethal force.

Then there’s the girls that Shido romances to the good, less destructive side. A lot of the time they fit well into the typical archetypes we’ve seen in other romance anime, but the backstories and personalities do make them intriguing. Some of them do genuinely want to live quietly and comfortably with Shido, but others answer the question “Violence?” with an enthusiastic “Yes!” Case in point: one of the most iconic characters in the series:

You can’t fix her, nor will she fix you or even try to make you worse. She’ll just leave a massive stain where you standing three seconds ago.

The series explains that the Spirits themselves come from different dimensions, but (minor spoiler) it’s possible for a human from this dimension to become a Spirit as well as what happened to some of the characters in the series. The AST is another display of the sci-fi within the series. With the Spirits being what they are–superpowered high school girls–the members of this elite team have to take the “fight fire with fire” approach to combating them with hi-tech battle suits. Not on par with what has been depicted all over the Gundam genre, but impressive all the same. It’s more like stripped down Iron Man armor in appearance.

Depending on your investment in the series overall and how you feel about the genres explained, you might get a kick out of it, or it might just be another harem series to add to the pile. Neither of these assessments are right or wrong, but it shows that it’s a product of its time. Does that mean the series hasn’t aged well? No. As I said, I got into it weeks before a fourth season was greenlit, not to mention a fifth season debuted a few months ago which suggests a determination to see it through to the end.

I know I’m not the first person to talk about this series and I will not be the last to do so. What I can do is simply point you in the direction of the series and however you choose to consume it. If possible for you, I say finish all five seasons of the anime and while you’re waiting on confirmation of a sixth, beat them to the punch with the light novels.

Each servicemember’s/veteran’s story is unique due to how big the U.S. military is and how fast changes can be made while serving. Christopher himself explains that he served from 1999 to 2010, so most of his stories show the culture of the Army during his service. That being said, he does still keep up with Army and military news for the purpose of educating would-be recruit candidates.
